Drive By Quotes Monday, Sep 29 2008

My tirade tonight is about people who drive up to you and offer a quote for getting dents out of your car.

Many of us happen to have a dent or three in our car. Have you ever been in a parking lot and someone drives up to you and says….I can fix that for you…or, Want a a quote on fixing that dent.

Now usually that person is in an out of state vehicle. Not the most comforting feeling. Second, there is no advertising on their vehicle saying that that is the business they are in. Third, I’m not going to do business with a stranger in the middle of a parking lot.

Today someone did one better. He pulled up along side of me on the street and beeped his horn. Now I live in tourist central (Orlando) and people are always asking for directions. I rolled my window down and the guy asked if I wanted a quote to fix my dented bumper. All three of the above things went through my mind. I said no thanks. Here is the best part. As he was driving away I noticed several quite noticable dents on his car. If you are that good at fixing cars, shouldn’t you fix your own car before trying to get others to trust you to fix their vehicle.

I love people. They are a never ending source of entertainment and wonder.

Dark Night Monday, Sep 29 2008

A dark Autumn night

I stand virtually alone on a beach.

To my left

to my right

sand reaches as far as I can see.

Above me the stars reach heavenward

continuing further than my most vivid imagination can fathom.

In front of me the ocean spreads

rich with its treasures

calling, pleading, inviting…

The choices are all so appealing

onward

upward

outward

Behind me the view is obstructed

by a building not more than fifty feet away.

This choice is also appealing

home, the familiar

but that is the past

and my life is the future

In All Things Give Thanks Tuesday, Sep 23 2008

It is easy to give thanks when things are good, when the weather is nice. I was tempted yesterday… so all I can say is Thanks be to God, I did not succumb to the temptation. I could have easily slipped and fallen into sin, but thankfully I was spared. I can not take credit for resisting the temptation but I am thankful that I am growing in my faith walk. As days and years go by, I will tempted again, but being tempted means I am living. Therefore it is even more reason to be thankful.

The Vine and The Branches Sunday, Sep 21 2008

I had an AH-HA moment today. I was attending the annual Faith Formation Day for the Diocese of Orlando. The gospel that we reflected on was “I am the Vine, you are the branches.” Like most people I have heard or read that particular many times. I have always visualized the Vine as a sprawling with fine, fragile branches that extend a far distance. Although as I imagine it, I am a branch that is healthy and firmly rooted in the Vine I am a distance from the Vine. Today as the guided reflection proceeded I got a new image of hearty, strong, well established vine, gnarled and the thickness of a medium sized tree. With that image I now visualize the branch as being firmly and closely conected to the vine…the branch actually coming right out of the vine. The parts to be pruned were given names…guilt, greed, anger…that private thing that only we know. We then give the Vine keeper permission to take those dead parts, cut them away and throw them into the fire. It is nice to get new perspectives on old stories. This is one of the joys of our Catholic faith, familiarity of scripture but still the opportunity to learn something new about it and ourselves. God’s word is tuly alive.

Fireproof the movie Saturday, Sep 20 2008

On Friday, September 26,
FIREPROOF will open in more than 800 theaters nationwide. The new movie
from the creators of Facing the Giants is an action-packed love story
about a firefighter, his wife … and a marriage worth rescuing!

While this faith-based film is flying under the Hollywood radar screen,
real people in real communities across the country are rallying behind it.
In fact, it will open in 95 more cities than originally planned thanks to
local people buying 1,000 tickets to bring it there!

I don’t know when I’ve been more excited about the opening of a movie. I
hope you will see FIREPROOF on its opening weekend. Hollywood judges a
movie based on how it does in its first three days, so it’s important to
go September 26-28.

If you want more information, go to FireprooftheMovie.com. See you at the
movies!

Great movie….everyone should see it. The Love Challenge should be done by everyone, not just married people.

The Secret Friday, Sep 19 2008

The Secret

  Two girls discover
the secret of life
in a sudden line of
poetry.I who don’t know the
secret wrote
the line. They
told me

(through a third person)
they had found it
but not what it was
not even

what line it was. No doubt
by now, more than a week
later, they have forgotten
the secret,

the line, the name of
the poem. I love them
for finding what
I can’t find,

and for loving me
for the line I wrote,
and for forgetting it
so that

a thousand times, till death
finds them, they may
discover it again, in other
lines

in other
happenings. And for
wanting to know it,
for

assuming there is
such a secret, yes,
for that
most of all.

Denise Levertov

As a writer myself, although not of the talent of many, This poem has always held a special place in my heart. It shows how, even if you have something in mind when writing a piece, the audience can take something totally different from it. This is the great thing about writing and reading what others have written. TJ

SILENCE

interrupted by a cricket

the buzzing of a streetlight

the fluttering of a flag

a pet to be played with

a daydream

CHILDHOOD

added responsibilities

growing older

LIFE

interrupted by death
